Enjoy this short interview with Whitney Peyton!

1. Obviously, with the talent you have, music has been a huge deal in your life. How long have you been working with music?
I've been recording for several years now, but before that I was writing poetry. When I started bumping beats and writing to them it came naturally and music helps me express emotions when I can't talk about them.
2. We downloaded your last album and it was incredible. What was it like working with artists like GrewSum, JJ Demon, and MARS?
I loved working with those guys. I always enjoy working with a wide array of artists... each of them bring a different flavor to the table so when you listen through all of my songs, none of them sound the same.
3. Being a new fan, I can't believe I never heard of you before the Grammys! Do you want to explain how you contributed to earn that Grammy?
I was approached by a group of local Philly producers who asked me if I'd like to be on a Children's Album with an anti-bullying theme for kids. At first I was hesitant because most of my music is not geared toward young kids, but it was for a good cause and I think more hip hop artist's should try to set examples for the next generation. I wrote and recorded on the album with other national acts and it ended up winning a Grammy Award in the category for "Best Children's Album". The CD is called "All about bullies... big and small". I'm glad they asked me to be part of it.
4. I recently wrote an artist spotlight on you (which can be found here:http://foultothefinishentertainment.blogspot.com/2012/03/artist-spotlight-whitney-peyton.html. I explain how you are one of my top pics for female artists. Being a female in the game how do you look at yourself compared to bigger acts like Nicki Minaj or Kreayshawn?
I try not to compare myself to other artists. Most of the time people compare me to them just because I'm a female.. but that's really the only thing we have in common. Nicki Minaj, Kreayshawn, and I all have different styles and sounds, but it's an honor to be mentioned amongst girls that have big buzz going right now.
5. With strong lyrics and aggressive attitude, you aren't a "Cookie Cutter Rapper". What are some main messages you are trying to send out?
I'm trying to show people that you can do anything despite your background and be anything despite your income. I'm making something out of nothing, with no money or big labels backing me.... other people can do it too.
6. A female Suburb rapper isn't the ideal background for a "rapper", and I do support what you are doing! But im sure sure you catch a lot of flame from negative people. How do you take it all in?
Going along with my last answer... I don't think it matters where I came from as long as I'm staying true to myself. Though my lyrics sound aggressive I in no way try to portray myself as a violent person or try to act like I'm from the hood. I'm hoping people will see me as a breath of fresh air in the rap genre and respect me for writing lyrics about things I know and live.
7. Being an artist myself, I can completely understand the concept of being that rapper who isn't a "Gang-Banger" or "Ghetto". The game is changing and we all are tyring to make our mark. What kind of mark do you want to leave with your music?
Above everything else...I want to be an artist that people can relate to.
8. Do you write all your own music and what are some of your inspirations?
Yes, I write all my own lyrics.. and have various producers do the actual instrumentals. I think it's important as a rapper to write all your own material. The whole point of being a rapper is being a lyricist. I'm inspired by all kinds of artists from Adele to Tech N9ne to Eminem and more.
9. Do you have any upcoming projects in the works?
I'm currently on the West Coast working with an Indie label called "Buzz Records" on a new solo album, but while I'm working on that I will also be releasing singles for free download. I am collaborating with some really well-known and respected artists and have a lot of tricks up my sleeve, so keep your eye out for new tracks!
10. Recently, I was reading the comments on your video, "Screw a Hook", and read how people are flipping their lid because they THOUGHT the "N word" was used. When dealing with irritable people, is it hard for you to keep your cool?
Even after announcing that the "N" word was NOT in the lyrics of that song people still continued to insist that it was... so sometimes there's no use in trying to respond to comments like that. People hear what they want to hear and like to create drama where it doesn't exist. The best thing to do is keep it moving!
11. Well thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us. I really appreciate it! Hey you should check out my music! No no no. A self plug right there was wrong! Just kidding. Is there anything that you would like to say before we close this out?
Ha yeah, I'll peep it out. Thanks for the interview and let your readers know they can download most of my music for free on WhitneyPeyton.com and to also hit me up on my social networking sites like facebook.com/WhitneyPeytonMusic and Twitter @WhitneyPeyton I'm always down to hear from everyone!
