Todays Artist Spotlight is a little more closer to heart then any of these will ever be. You will see why.
Jennifer Newberry is a up and coming artist from the Northwest. Me being a Washington State native, I can only describe this woman in two words: Beautiful and Talented.
Newberry is an Swedish American singer and songwriter, whose styles range from Pop, R&B and alternative rock. Being so multi-talented she has been compared to artists such as Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera. With the love and passion she has for music she only brings the best story telling to her songs. Being driven by her own past and own life situations Newberry has most definitely shown she is more than just a "street performer".
Being influenced with different styles of music and artists like The Beatles and ABBA, along with Swedish lullabies, Newberry has the know how to take over the singing game in the coming years. Dedicated to her work she aims to be a "Memorable performer, vocalist, lyricist, and actress." (Like I said, VERY multi-talented!)
Her latest album, "Inspiration From The Rain", is truly a work of art. This is a excerpt from her website, "Paints a picture of the obstacles, the questions, and the love that has defined her." Obviously this isn't one album you would want to miss! Here is a music video of a song that Newberry was featured on!
We were able to talk with Jennifer Newberry and we asked a few questions about herself and her career! This what she had to say.
1. With a beautiful voice like yours we would have to assume you've done music all your life. how long have you been singing for?
Newberry: Wow thank you. You are right I have been singing most of my life. I have old recordings on cassette tapes with me singing. The oldest one I have I'm around 3 years old singing Winnie The Poo . Haha my favorite program back in the day:-)
2. What got you into singing?
Newberry: My mom was a working singer so I was around music all day, everyday. At first I just liked to observe others sing and not take too much space. I was put in choirs when I was really little and I remember only moving my lips at times. But at home I would turn up the music and sing all my favorite songs over and over, dancing around singing at the top of my lungs.
3. Do your write all your own music?
Newberry: All the songs that I have released independently are written and co written by me. All the Lyrics and Melodies I created.
4. Based on the latest release of your album, "Inspiration From The Rain", We can obviously tell you aren't someone who is scared to say whats on her mind. Was the album based off situations in your life?
Newberry: A lot of communication has been translated through my music. At times I do feel that it's hard to express certain things and some may not think that I have any concerns until they have heard a song that expressed it. But I do have my heart on my sleeve when it comes to my music and the songs on the album are things that I have experienced. The hardest one to write emotionally was "Memories of You". I remember crying while writing it. It was such a difficult time. A broken heart is very painful. I was lost and still in love feeling very lonely. The song was a release, a gathering of my thoughts, an expression of the pain.
5. Since the release of your album, have you worked on any new material? or are you just focusing on performances? You have a few shows lined up in March. That has to be exciting.
Newberry: Yes I have been working on new material and the music is quite different then the music on my album "Inspiration From The Rain". I'm happy with how it's turning out. When I write a song I like it to naturally form it's self by feeling. I'm a full time musician, working in different bands all the time and so it's rewarding to be able to play shows and making a living that way. I may not be rich (yet) ;-) but I'm happy.
6. Being compared to artists such as Alicia Keys, How does that make you feel? you must feel overly excited to say the least!
Newberry: Alicia Keys is an outstanding artist so it's very flattering to be compared to such caliber. I hope that one day an aspiring artist will be compared to me and be asked by someone, how does that make you feel overly excited to say the least!!;-) That would be such an honor.
7. Being from the northwest myself, I love seeing amazing talent come out of there. Where do you see yourself and your music in 5 years?
Newberry: In 5 years I hope to still be singing on stage, writing music and being in the business of art, music and theater. I don't ever want that part of my life to end.
8. If you had a choice to work with some of the Top artists, Who would they be?
Newberry: Wow, you know if I was able to choose I would have loved to have been in the presence of Michael Jackson. He was so magical to me, he's lyrics, so powerful he was basically a modern Jesus haha. There was hope, strive & passion in everything he did. Very dramatic. Like how I see myself. He got lost in the stories of the songs, he acted them out when he sang. The Beatles oh my gosh love love love the Beatles.. I would also like to work with Coldplay and create a song together with them, Alanis Morrisette because I want to see how she records and creates. She has some amazing songs with orchestras, like the song "Uninvited" & "Citizen Of The Planet" and I would love to have that in my songs too. Taylor Swift, because I think I wrote a perfect song that would fit her style. I think it would be so cool to have her sing one of my songs:-D.The Swedish singers Robyn & Lykke Li, because I love their clever lyrics and melodies and I want as much of their creativeness to rub off on me as possible! Lauren Hill & Wclef, so we can create a song with an "old school" hip hop sound (hip hop with jazz). Aaand Brandy & Mariah Carey so that I can steal their voices:-)
9. Do you have any last words you would like to say?
Newberry: Hmm I think since I'm a big sister, I have always been the extra mom trying to make sure that everyone is getting along.. I would like to say.. Try to find something positive in everyone, be respectful and open minded because we are all different and to truly understand someone you have to know their truth, their background. And if you are raising children exposed them to the reality of the world because if you try protect them from everything they won't get the thick skin they need to survive out there and give them the freedom to have their own beliefs and thoughts.. Because where liberty of thought is conformed, growth subsides...
